Hunter Valley

The Hunter Valley in New South Wales- the great pioneers of the wine industry, dared to begin with humble plantings and slowly realise a wine industry in this hot vast young British colony in the reign of George III. John Hunter, James Busby, George Wyndham, then the Tyrrell, Drayton, Tulloch and McWilliam families; in modern times no shortage of colourful characters spread early viticulture into today’s enchanted  wine lands just a few hours’ drive north of Sydney. Max Lake, James Halliday, Robin Tedder, Len Evans, Frank Margan and many more. Dr Nello Iannuzzi has vineyards in Mount Eyre on the Broke Road, and in the heart of Pokolbin at Three Ponds. We like Nello’s very serious persona and utter dedication to medicine and wine. He supplies us with his superb chardonnay and shiraz

Southern Highlands

Bousaada, a small family winery in Mittagong blessed with the right cool climate for Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling and other varietals in generous years. There are over forty wineries in this Southern Highlands region now, and it will in time become the Yarra Valley of Sydney.  Cold in winter, hot in summer, but it is relatively free of humidity and has superb ancient soils.

Yarra Valley

On the Hume Highway, our Route du Vin takes us much further down the Great Dividing Range to Yarrawood in Yarra Glen, Yarra Valley (repetition is a wonderful teacher!) Wines from the Yarra won prizes in Europe in the 1870s and 1880s .Today the region has revived  under pioneers like Bailey Carrodus, Reg Egan,Drs Peter Middleton and Peter Macmahon, the late Jack Church, James Halliday again, and the living treasure Gil de Pury of an original winemaking family of the Valley.

Near Yarra Glen is the home of Dame Nellie Melba whose father David Mitchell founded the lime quarry still visible at Lilydale. Again an European style  region, very cold in winter, dry, hot in summer, superb for chardonnay, riesling, pinot noir and many other varietals. Domaine Chandon of Champagne House Moet et Chandon, is not far from Yarrawood’s welcoming cellar door. Our Pinot Noir, Cabernet and Merlot , Sauvignon Blanc and Late Harvest Riesling come from Yarrawood.
